Antifungal Potential of Bamboo shoot (Bambusa spinosa) and Jute Leaf (Corchorus olitorius) extract against Candida albicans. An Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. October 2016. Adviser: Ms. Karen Krista M. Escobar. The study entitled "Antifungal Potential of Bamboo shoot (Bambusa spinosa) and Jute Leaf (Corchorus olitorius) extract against Candida albicans " was conducted at De La Salle University, Dasmarifias Interdisciplinary Science and Research Unit, Dasmarifias, Cavite and at the Department of Medical Technology, College of Nursing, Cavite State University, Indang Cavite from June 2016 to July 2016. Generally, the study aimed to determine the antifungal potential of Bamboo (Bambusa spinosa) shoot extract and Saluyot (Corchurus olitorius) leaf extract against Candida albicans. Specifically, it aimed to: (l) determine the antifungal components present in bamboo shoot and saluyot leafextract; (2) determine the antifungal susceptibility of Candida albicans treated with different concentrations of individual and combined extracts of bamboo shoots and saluyot leaves and; (3) determine which among the concentrations of each prepared extract is effective in exhibiting antifungal property against Candida albicans. One kilogram of each pulverized Bambusa spinosa shoots and Corchurus olitorius leaves were soaked separately in I h L of methanol for three days in an airtight bottle. These were further concentrated using rotary evaporator to obtain the extract. From the obtained individual extracts and combined bamboo shoots and saluyot leaves extracts, different concentrations were prepared (10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90% and 100%). Each concentration was prepared by adding distilled water to the extracts to obtain the desired concentrations. The researchers used one hundred fifty milligrams of Fluconazole for the positive control and a normal saline solution for negative control. Punched filter paper disks were used as anti-fungal disk. These were soaked in the extracts for fifteen minutes. After fifteen minutes, the disks were pressed down with forceps to the agar where Candida albicans were inoculated. After 24 hours of incubation, the zone of inhibitions for each of the concentration of plant extract was measured by a vernier caliper. Results were tabulated and analyzed using the 5% Tukey's test to determine whether there were significant differences between the means of independent selected concentration of plant extract as an effective antifungal. The same statistical test was used in determining which treatment the microorganisms were most susceptible. Based on the study conducted by the researchers, Bamboo shoot is positive for antifungal component like alkaloids, saponins, terpenoids, glycoside, phenols, diterpenes, steroids, anthraquinones. While Saluyot leaf is positive for tannins, saponins, diterpenes, steroids, and anthraquinones. One hundred percent of Bamboo shoot and Saluyot leaf extracts is the most effective concentration against Candida albicans. On the other hand, the combined concentration of Bamboo shoot and Saluyot leaf, which is 40 percent bamboo shoot and 60 percent saluyot leaf extracts is the most effective against Candida albicans.Based on the study conducted by the researchers, the following recommendations are suggested: (l) use another solvent like Ethanol, Hexane and Aqueous solution for the bamboo shoot and saluyot leaf extracts, (2) test the individual and combination concentrations of bamboo shoot and saluyot leaf extracts against other fungi or microorganisms, (3) try other methods in extracting the bamboo shoot and saluyot leaf phytochemical | |
