520 3 _a CANARIA, JOSE CLACIO. Don Severino Agricultural College, May 1994. An Assessment of the Training Needs of Farmers in the CALABARZON Areas. Major Adviser: Dr. Anastacia M. Bayas The study was conducted in the provinces of Cavite and Laguna to identify the perceived training needs of farmers in the CALABARZON areas, specifically to: 1) identify the personal characteristics of farmers in the CALABARZON province; 2) identify the subject matters and particular topics needed by the farmers for trainings; 3) assess special preferences of farmers as to methods, manner, organization to conduct, duration and location of any training program that may be developed for them; 4) find the relationship between farmers” characteristics and their perceived between the personal characteristics of farmers and their perceived training needs. Three hundred farmer respondents were selected through random sampling and were interviewed using an interview schedule. The data were analyzed using central tendency and Chi-square tests with 5% level of significance. Eighty five percent (85%) of the farmer respondents were male with a mean age of 50 years. Most of them (80.66%) were married. About 65.66% had reached at least intermediate level of education with a mean of 6 years informal schooling. Farmers were generally well experienced with a mean of 25 years worked experience. Around 65% of the respondents were residents in the area for 21 to 60 years, 24% were residents for 61 years and above, and only 10% were residents for 1-20 years. Respondents differed significantly in their perception of training needs in four subject matters and particular topics. The respondents preferred lecture with demonstration methods on livestock production, crop production and on processing. Sixty-six percent (66%) of the respondents opted for lecture with demonstration and 33.8% chose pure practicum and -demonstration. Live out seminar was the preferred manner for manpower skills. Eighty percent, 85.2% and 74.4% desired live-out seminar in livestock production, crop production and in processing, respectively. On the other hand, 20%, 14.98% and 25.6% liked live-in seminar on livestock production, crop production and on processing, respectively.
