A mechanized sludge solid-liquid separator was constructed at Indang, Cavite and was evaluated at the Acquired Land piggery project of the Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite from December 2001 to January 2002. The study aimed to determine the required rotational speed of the machine that gives the most efficient separation; determine parameters of the liquid in terms of total solids, and pH and the parameters of the solids in terms of moisture content and weight of solids before and after separation; determine which among the two (cheese cloth and net) filtering material is more efficient in separating solid from liquid; and evaluate the efficiency of the machine in solids capture and dewatering. The machine was made up of five major components: housing, rotating-separating vessel, inlet assembly, scraper, and power source. The sludge was separated at three different rotational speeds of 300-400 rpm, 700-800 rpm, and 1100-1200 rpm using cheese cloth and net as filtering materials. Results showed that the type of filtering materials used affected the separation of solids from liquid. It was observed that the best separation was obtained using net as filtering materials. It was concluded that the separated liquid can be safely disposed of in lands or in inland waters without violating the Department of Environmental Resources (DENR) standards for liquid waste disposal.
