The Use of Improvised Apparatuses in Measuring Materials in Science at Judge Guillermo Eleazar Polytechnic College. Tagkawnyan, Quezon. Adviser: Dr. Cecilia B. Banaag. This study was conducted primarily to determine the effectiveness of the use of improvised apparatuses in measuring materials in Science I of first year high school students of the Judge Guillermo Eleazar Polytechnic College for School Year 2001 — 2002. Specifically, it sought to: a) determined the length of the materials using the improvised and the standard apparatuses; b) determine the volume of the different liquids using the improvised and the standard graduated cylinder; c) determine the weight of the objects using the standard and the improvised apparatuses for measuring mass; and d) determine the differences in measurements using the improvised and the standard apparatuses on the length, volume, and mass of objects. The study used the descriptive method of research. The respondents were 125 freshman high school students, 59 of which males and 66 were females. The following materials were used in the study: standard and improvised apparatuses such as improvised ruler/meter stick; improvised graduated cylinder; and improvised equal arm balance. Students made use of the standard and improvised apparatuses in measuring the different materials. The measurements were then recorded and analyzed. Statistical measures such as the mean and the standard deviation were used to determine the measurement of length, volume and mass facilitated by the students. T- test was used to compare the differences between the measurements using the standard and the improvised apparatuses. Results of the study revealed the following: the length of the materials using the improvised and the standard apparatuses were almost the same; the volume of the different liquids using the improvised and the standard cylinder were the same; and the mass of the objects were similar. Generally, there was no significant difference in the recorded measurements of the length, volume and mass of materials using the standard and the improvised apparatuses. Thus, the improvised apparatuses mentioned above could effectively substitute the standard measuring devices. | |
