VASE-LIFE OF AMERICAN ROSE AS AFFECTED BY DIFFERENT LIQUID MEDIA. Mrs. Edna A. Vida, Adviser. The study was conducted to determine the effects of the different liquid media and which among the different liquid media will be the best in lengthening the vaselife of American rose cut flowers. The experiment was set in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), using five treatments replicated three times with four sample units. A total of sixty freshly harvested American rose cut flowers were used in the study. The following were the treatments used; freatment 1 - pure water (control), Treatment 2 - sugar and water solution (1 tbsp. sugar in every 100 ml. of water), Treatment 3 - water and vitalex solution (3 drops of vitalex per liter of water), Treatment 4 - water and Alpha Naphthalene acetic Acid solution (ANAA) (3 drops of ANAA per liter of water), {freatment 5 - water with vitalex and ANAA solution (3 drops of vitalex and ANAA in every liter of water).Tthe study revealed that the use of preservatives in the vaselife of American rose cut flowers is effective in prolonging and lengthening the vaselife of the flowers. Significant effects were observed in the use of water and ANAA solution. This liquid media delayed the softening of the stem of the flowers and the wilting of the flowers, as well as the number of days from soaking to full blooming was also prolonged. The use of water and vitalex solution was almost equally good as an alternate to water and ANAA solution. The use of water and sugar solution is also advisable in terms of inexpensiveness. The control treatment was found ineffective in lengthening the vaselife of the flowers. The combination of the two chemicals (vitalex and ANAA) mixed with water was also found ineffective. This effect could be clearly explained that the media produces high concentration of chemicals which was not effective in prolonging the vaselife of the flowers.
