Doctor of Philosophy in Agriculture major in Crop Science. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite Adviser: Julio G. Alava, PhD The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different levels and sources of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium from inorganic and foliar application on bitter gourd. The study followed a 2 x 2 x 5 split-split plot design in RCBD. Factor A (Bitter gourd cultivar) was assigned as the main plot while Factor B (Liquid foliar fertilizer application), as subplot treatment while Factor C (Inorganic fertilizer) was the sub-sub plot treatment. There were twenty (20) treatment combinations that were replicated three times. Basal application of inorganic fertilizer at varying level was done. Foliar fertilizer was sprayed 21 days after transplanting at weekly interval. Interaction between cultivar/inorganic fertilizer and foliar application/inorganic fertilizer was detected on the number of water sprouts. Effect of individual factors such as inorganic fertilizer were highly significant in terms of number of fruit, weight, diameter, water sprouts and significant on weight of deformed fruits. Cultivar and foliar fertilizer application significantly increased the total harvested water sprouts. Trident Improved F1 was gave the highest number of water sprouts between the two cultivars tested. A comparison between two promising cultivars from East-west Seed Company cv. Galaxy F1 and Allied Botanical cv. Trident Improved F1 was done in the study. The two cultivars responded similarly well with increasing rates of inorganic fertilizers. Trident Improved F1 responded significantly better at 50 percent recommended rates of inorganic fertilizer with foliar application. However, Galaxy F1 needed 100 percent of the recommended inorganic fertilizer to attain the desired yield. The cost and return analysis revealed that Trident Improved F1 applied with 50 percent of the recommended inorganic fertilizer with foliar application gave the highest yield at 25.61 metric tons per hectare, with a net income of Php 711,463 and the return of investment of 227 percent compared to Galaxy F1 with only 174.52 percent. The lowest gate price during the experimental period was Php 40 per kilogram. | |
