The Stance of Registered Voters in Selected Barangays of General Mariano Alvarez, Cavite on Amending the Qualifications of Politicians in the Philippine Congress. Undergraduate Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of College of Arts and Sciences Cavite State University Indang, Cavite. Eligibility qualifications established for Politicians running for a position in the Philippine Congress have received proposed amendments to it. This paper investigates the stance of registered voters in GMA, Cavite, on the qualifications for members of the Philippine Congress established by the 1987 Philippine Constitution, with a focus on the idea of amending these qualifications proposed by the public and some legislators. Specifically, it identifies the Constitution's eligibility qualifications for the Senate and House of Representatives, which the voters think are enough for the need amendment, as well as any eligibility qualifications the registered voters would like to remove, add or suggest. To collect the necessary data, the researchers conducted online interviews with open-ended questions designed to measure qualitative data. The researchers interviewed 3 respondents in each 4 barangays of GMA, Cavite namely: Barangay Kapitan Kua, Ramon Cruz, Gavino Maderan, and Bernardo Pulido, with a total of 12 voter-respondents. The results showed that the majority of respondents are unaware of the current qualifications of politicians in the Philippine Congress, as well as its proposed amendments. The registered voters believe that the qualifications for age, being able to read and write, and residency should be amended among the five qualifications for members of the Senate and House of Representatives. They believe that additional qualifications should be included: must have clean records or backgrounds or did not commit any crimes against humanity and no corrupt practices; must have a Bachelor Degree; and must be proven of competence, transparency, and integrity. The researchers filled gaps and debunked the previous study regarding the qualifications in the legislation, that nowadays registered voters believe that intellectual capacity, which connects educational background, political experiences, and moral aspects, must be the grounds for amendment. | |
