520 3 _aHERNANDEZ, NELMA Expenditure Patterns of Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) Pensioners in Alfonso, Cavite. Bachelor of Science in Business Management major in Financial Management, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2012. Adviser Ms. Estrellita Corpuz. The study was conducted to determine the Expenditure Patterns of GSIS Pensioners in Alfonso, Cavite. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the socio-demographic characteristics of the GSIS pensioners in terms of age, gender, civil status, retirement age, line of work when in service and number of dependents; to determine type of retirement benefits GSIS pensioners avail; to identify expenditure patterns of the respondents; and to determine the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics and types of availed retirement benefits to the expenditure pattern of the respondents. The study was conducted in Alfonso, Cavite. A list of respondents was secured from Alfonso Senior Citizens Office and Alfonso Public School Teachers Association in Alfonso, Cavite. The respondents of the study were GSIS pensioners with a total population of 110. Slovin’s formula was used to determine the sample size of 84 with 5 percent degree of error. Fishbowl technique was used to identify the individual respondents. Eighty-four GSIS pensioners participated in the study. Most of them were female (81 percent). Most participants, 58 percent were married, 32 percent were widowed. Single pensioners were less than 10 percent of the participants. Most of the participants were teachers, 82 percent, and the remaining 18 percent were classified as other government employees. The average age of the respondents was 71 years old. The average retirement age of the respondents was 60 years old. Result indicates that most participants had zero to few dependents. The type of benefit mostly chosen by the majority of participants was lump sum and old age (80 percent). There were five allocations or expenditure patterns that surfaced: (a) Low in health and basic commodities x low in investments x high in others, (b) high in health and basic commodities x low in investments x low in others, (c) high in health and basic commodities x low in investments x high in others, (d) high in health and basic commodities x high in investments x low in others, and (e) high in health and basic commodities x high investment x high others (including education and leisure). All patterns except for pattern (a) had high expenditure on health and basic commodities. Pattern (b) was the pattern most respondents subscribed to (51 percent), which put high allocation on health and basic commodities and low on other expenditures. Chi-square test of significance was used to test the association of different demographic variables and types of benefit with expenditure patterns. Findings of the study revealed that there was a significant relationship between the number of dependents and expenditure patterns of the GSIS Pensioners.
