An Undergraduate Thesis, Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics (with specialization in Statistics), Cavite State University, Indang , Cavite, March 2011, Adviser: Mr. Antonio V. Cinto. The study was conducted to (1) determine the common errors of students in solving problems in Descriptive Statistics; (2)identify the error patterns of students in solving problems in Descriptive Statistics; and (3) determine the association or relation 0f the demographic profile of the students with the type of error they committed. The test used as the instrument of the study included two components: Measures of Central Tendency (mean, median and mode) and Measures of Variability (standard deviation, variance and coefficient of variation). The type of error was based on Newman Hierarchical Error Model which included reading type error, comprehension, transformation, process skill, encoding and careless error. The variables emphasized were age, gender, year level, course, type of school where graduated and the type of error committed This study was conducted at the Department of Physical Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite from October, 2010 to March, 2011.The respondents of this study were the students who took Statistics I and Statistics 11 subjects in second semester A.Y 2010-2011. These respondents were selected through the use of cluster sampling. The cluster units were the sections coming from the different colleges of the respondents. The results showed that the most common error made by the students in solving for the Measures of Central Tendency was the transformation error, followed by the comprehension error. It was also found that the most frequent error made by the students in solving for the Measures of Variability was the process skill error, followed by transformation error. There were few occurrence of encoding error and carelessness. There was no error found in reading. Among the demographic profiles, the type of secondary school where the respondents graduated and their age were the variables without any relation with the errors committed. The gender, year level and the course were slightly related to the type of the errors committed. | |
