Undergraduate Thesis Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Cavite State University Indang, Cavite, April 2011. Thesis Adviser: Mrs. Nenita B. Panaligan, RN, MAN. The study entitled “Family Profile and Sexual Risk-Taking Behavior of College Students in Cavite State University, AY 2010-2011” aimed to determine the relationship of demographic characteristics and family profile to the sexual risk-taking behavior of college students in CvSU- Main Campus. The study utilized 380 single college students, aged 15 to 20 years old enrolled for the first semester, AY 2010-2011. The number of respondents was determined through Slovin’s formula. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were used to answer the research objectives. A typical college student in CvSU — Main Campus, aged 15 to 20 years old is raised and lives in a normal family where both biological parents are present. They have varied economic background as evidenced by the diverse range of their school allowances. Based on the study that was conducted, the findings showed an almost equal distribution of male and female respondents. Most of the respondents lived outside Indang but within the province of Cavite. Majority of them lived at home with their parents while studying. The average weekly school allowance of the respondents was more than PhP700. In terms of family profile, majority of the respondents were living with their two biological parents. College students are less inclined to engage in sexual risk-taking activities when they are living at home with their parents than in boarding house/dormitories, when both parents are present in the family, when there is a loving relationship in the family and when the level of parents’ supervision and monitoring is good. This is a fact that parents should be aware of. Thus, the presence of both parents in the family, the relationship inside the family and how parents supervise and monitor their child are all imperative to the sexual risk-taking activities of their adolescent child. Moreover, the mother’s level of strictness significantly influences the students’ early sexual practice. This means that the discipline and/or guidance that the students experienced with their mothers affect their decision whether or not to engage in sex at an early age. Parents who highly disapprove PMS and early marriage encourage their children to abstain from engaging in sexual risk-taking activities. Overall, findings showed that only a few portion of respondents engaged in sexual risk taking activities and more respondents still held conservative views about sex. | |
