HABITAT AND SPECIES IDENTIFICATION OF PHLOEOMYS CUMING/ IN CANAS RIVER WATERSHED CAVITE, PHILIPPINES. Undergraduate Thesis Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2022. Adviser Prof. Noel A. Sedigo. The study was conducted from May to June of 2022 in one of the six major watersheds in Cavite which is the Canas River Watershed. The study is about the Habitat and Species Identification of Phloeomys cumingi in Canas River Watershed Cavite, Philippines. Generally, this study aims to: 1. Determine where Southern Luzon Slender-Tailed Giant Cloud rats can be found in the Cafias River Watershed; 2. Determine the physical and behavioral characteristics of the Southern Luzon Slender Tailed Giant Cloud rat found in Cafias River Watershed; 3. Determine the Southern Luzon Slender-Tailed Giant Cloud rat's distribution and habitat in the Canas River Watershed; 4. Identify the threats to P.cumingi's population in Cafias River Watershed; and 5. Recommend measures to protect the Southern Luzon SlenderTailed Giant Cloud rat. The field of the study areas that were visited to conduct survey interview and secondary data was gathered for the experiment per barangay of Amadeo, Indang, and Tagaytay which were upland parts of Cavite. Using interviews directly from the locals who had further knowledge from the designated sites where the Slender-tailed Giant Cloud rat resides and live. The study covered the 94 barangays in the Canas River Watershed, however the sites that was conducted were Indang with only 6 barangays while in Amadeo was 22 barangays and in Tagaytay was 5 barangays. Overall, the study was conducted in 33 barangays. The rest of the 61 barangays was not considered underdeveloped. Only few per barangay of the study sites were recognized and seen the P. cumingi by the locals due to its high vegetation and abundant forest. There was only one specimen that was found and observed in the study, and it was an infant. It was captured by two locals near the barangay of Limbon in Indang Cavite. The key informant that we interviewed had captured P. cumingi and most of the time the area where they capture the said species was in an area where there were a lot of kaong near their houses. In addition to this, they use the "Bulitas"which it was compared like a marble or " holen" to capture the P. cumingi. Usually, the local farmers only capture them at night time and most of it were dead when they capture P. cumingi. The specimen observed had only 21.59 centimeters which is why it is smaller than adult cloud rats. The paw of the juvenile cloud rat can be compared to the cat's paw that was bulge. There claw's in the other hand, had 5 claws but the observed cloud but the thumb was underdeveloped due to accidental tendencies where the cloud rat's often bite it on purpose. The cloud rat keeps sucking their own tail as the only coping mechanism used when it felt alone. In terms of their nesting and feeding, the species of Southern Luzon Slender tailed Giant Cloud rat tend to feed sweet, sour, bitter and somehow bland in taste. The specimen like to eat Ripe Mango but not the unripe one where in, it has hard structure and more sour taste which is the specimen do not like to eat that, it also eats saba banana but there is a left over, the researchers try another variety of banana which is senorita and lakatan. Canas River Watershed had areas where the cloud rats had been identified and seen by the key informants, using an ocular observation and interview of key informants the Cloud rat's distribution and habitat was usually seen in Riparian environment which was point out from the key informants that had been said in the interviews. The riparian areas had a high vegetation which is why the key Informants that were interviewed had stated that Cloud rats are elusive, and they can only be seen at night for they are nocturnal. Areas with indigenous trees, such as ipil-ipil, kaong, takip asin, hauli, banaba, and bignay, can also be found in the upland. Cloud rats are nocturnal which also means that based on the observed species
