520 | 3 | _aThe study "Pre-sowing Hardening Study on Bush Sitao" was conducted from August 1978 to February '1979 at the Plant Science Experimental Field of the Don Severino Agricultural College. The study covered two phases. The first phase was conducted from August to September 1978 to determine the effect of PSH of seeds on germination and growth of bush sitao. In this phase, the seeds were first soaked in different solutions i.e. 1% Ca012, 2.5%,Ca012' 5% CaCl2, 0.1% NaC1, 0.3% NaC1 and distilled water. The seeds were removed from the solutions six hours before radicle emergence and then air dried for 48 hours before sowing. Results showed that a low concentration of CaC12 (1% and 2.5%) delayed germination of seeds but at a high concentration (5%) the rate of germination was inhibited. The seeds soaked in distilled water produced the highest percentage germination (95%) followed by those soaked in NaCl (0.1% and.0.3%). Seedlings from these treatments were healthy and vigorous with dark green leaves. The second phase of the study was a field test. In this method, the first three treatments from Phase that gave the best results were used in the field test. They were 0.1% NaC1, 0.3% NaC1 and distilled water. A control with no hardening was also used. The hardened seeds were planted in rows at a distance of 75 x 50 centimeters at the rate of 3-4 seeds per hill. Watering was done in the morning and in the afternoon to allow seeds to germinate but this was stopped when the seedlings were already established. The result showed that seeds soaked in 0.3% NaC1 significantly produced the highest number and heaviest pods per plant, the heaviest fresh weight per plant and the highest yield in kilograms per hectare even under water stress condition | |
