Management Practices, Production Performances and Cost Effectiveness of Different Duck Layer Farms in the Province of Cavite. Adviser: Rezin C. Bahia, DVM, MS This study was conducted to describe and determine the management practices, production performances and cost effectiveness of different duck layer farms in the province of Cavite. The farm that were subjected to the study are located in Indang, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, Gen. Trias, Naic and Tanza. All farms used only one species of layer duck, the Philippine Mallard duck or "itik" (Anas platyrhynchos), under commercial scale of duck farming. Duck raised in all farms ranged from 150-4000 heads. The types of production systems that are being used in different farms are intensive, semi-intensive and herding system. The stocks of these farms were purchased within Cavite, outside Cavite and both in Cavite and Laguna. Acquiring was done quarterly and the selection of stocks is by age. The type of housing that are being used by different duck raisers includes caged, range and combination of range and caged, which is made of welded wire, poultry wire, fishnets and combination of fishnets and poultry wire. The flooring is litter type using rice hulls and rice straws and combination of slat/litter flooring which is very accessible due to gradually inclining slat floor from the litter flooring. In feeding their ducks, those farmers that practice intensive and semi intensive system of production are using commercial duck layer feeds and they use ground water as source of drinking materials. On the other hand, the natural occurring food in the rice fields (palay, snail and insects) are utilized by those farmers that practice herding system. The irrigation canal in the rice field is the source of drinking water for their ducks. In terms of production performances, all farms performed above the standard, that is 70% (duck-day). Eggs coming from different farms were sold as balut, itlog na maalat and fresh eggs. All farms have no vaccination program and they have no pest and predator control measures. Problems that encountered in most farms were the source of feeds. Only one farm has a problem in acquiring their stocks. Result of the study showed that though different duck layer farms in the province of Cavite are using different management practices, they are all profitable whether the traditional or confinement system is used. However, herding system of production is more profitable as compared to intensive and semi-intensive system due to lower cost of production | |
