Cavite State University, Imus, Cavite. April 2008. Thesis Adviser: Mrs. Luisita A. Marzan. The study was conducted to identify the determinants of the demand for credit cards in Imus, Cavite with emphases on the following: (1) to determine the socioeconomic characteristics of the respondents; (2) to identify which credit card providers is commonly used by the residents of Imus; (3) to determine the usage pattern of the respondents and the barriers in using credit cards; (4) to identify the reasons for availing credit cards; (5) to assess the degree of importance of using credit cards; and (6) to identify the determinants of the demand for credit cards in Imus, Cavite. Purposive sampling was used in the study. The sample size was composed of 100 respondents. This was obtained using quota sampling. The study was conducted in the municipality of Imus, Cavite particularly in Lotus Mall, FRC Supermalls-Imus, Waltermart-Imus, and Imus Public Market. Multiple linear regression analysis was employed in identifying the determinants of the demand for credit card in Imus, Cavite. The Liken scale was used in measuring the degree of importance of credit cards for the respondent and descriptive statistics such as mean, frequency count, rank, and percentage was used to present other data. Most of the respondents belonged to 30 to 34 year category while more than one-fourth of the respondents (30%) have an income of PhP 10,001 to PhP 15,000. In terms of the civil status, more than one-half of the respondents are married, and majorities are females. On the average the respondents had only two dependents and in terms of the educational attainment, 67% graduated from a four year course in college and only three percent were high school graduates. The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) was the leading credit card provider. Almost all of the respondents brought their credit cards regularly. They normally used their cards in buying food and non-food items and they used it usually only if needed. On the average, the respondents spent PhP 1,000 to PhP 10,000 in paying their monthly credit card billing and they usually pay it on the due date. However, some respondents encountered some problems in using credit cards like excessive charges and penalties, offline, long process of payment, difficulties in debt restructuring, collection harassment, wrong billings, inaccurate balances, and late delivery of the statement of account. This study also showed that the primary reason for availing the credit cards was for emergency purposes. Finally, among the independent variables that were considered in the study, income was the only one found significant (p<.05) as the determinant of the demand for credit cards in Imus, Cavite. The researcher highly recommends the following: (a) conduct similar study that will focus on other geographical areas; (b) increase the sample size; (c) use other set of variables; and (d) use other model that may be fitted in the study. | |
