Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. March 2013. Adviser: Engr. Edwin R. Arboleda. The Design and Development of a Low-cost Electronic Wheelchair was conducted from November 2012 to January 2013. The general objective of the design was to design and develop a Low-cost Electronic Wheelchair. Specifically, it aimed to interface the navigational controller and sensors for obstacle-avoidance to the Arduino circuit. It also aimed to modify the manual wheelchair. Moreover, it aimed to develop a program for the navigational controller and sensors using C Programming Language and aimed to test and evaluate the performance of the design project. Lastly, it aimed to conduct a cost analysis for the study. The system used C Programming Language to control and manipulate the microcontroller unit. The Arduino AtMega 328 microcontroller was used because it fits the requirements of the design. Generally, its ports were used to interface input and output devices such as the ultrasonic sensors, infrared proximity sensor, joystick, motor and motor driver. The design project was tested and evaluated through user-acceptance and technical evaluation at Engineering Science Building, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite and Bahay Alima at Carasuchi, Indang, Cavite. For user-acceptance, 30 PWD participants tested and evaluated the electronic wheelchair while for technical evaluation measurements were made by the authors to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of the electronic wheelchair. Kruskal-Wallis (F-test) was used to analyze the gathered data and results prove that the overall performance of the system is excellent. It was concluded based on the statistical results and cost analysis that the performance of the system is equivalent to commercially-available electric wheelchairs but with minimal cost given that it has added features such as the infrared sensor as the safety switch and ultrasonic sensors for obstacle avoidance and edge (stairs) detection. For future researchers, the authors recommend additional features for the system such as a remote control as another navigational controller, an ultrasonic sensor in front to avoid obstacles, an ultrasonic sensor at the rear to detect the edge (stairs), larger wheelchair size to accommodate bigger users and buzzers for obstacle indication to alert the user. The total cost of the design project was Php 15, 665.00. | |
