This study was conducted at the Microbiology Research Laboratory from May 1998 to March 1999. Generally, it aimed to determine what local substrates and what specific composition and combinations of these substrates could be made to obtain locally formulated media that could substitute dehydrated medium. Potato Dextrose Agar, for the growth of fungi like Geotrichum sp., Mucor al ternaria, Cladosporium
resinae, Helmin thosporium sp., Cercospora sp., Peni ci11 um notatum and Aspergillus niger.
The potato and dextrose components of Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) were substituted with local substrates like aerial potato, molasses, brown sugar, refined sugar, and coconut
water.
Results revealed that Aerial Potato Refined Sugar Agar was the best PDA—substituted medium for Geotrichum sp. and Cladosporium resinae. Aerial Potato Molasses Agar (APMA) supported the best growth for Penicillum notatum, while AerialPotato Brown Sugar Agar (APBSA) of Cercospora sp., Aspergillus niger and Helminthosporium sp. However, Mucor al ternaria grew well in all PDA—substituted media. These media were much cheaper than the commercially used PDA.
