The project aimed to apply the management skills in hog fattening enterprise, perform the proper management of hogs in an agribusiness enterprise; and determine the profitability of a hog fattening enterprise and gain profit from fattening hogs. This project was conducted at the swine production project of the Department of Animal Science, Cavite State University-Indang Campus from January 17 to April 17, 2018.
The project used for weanlings purchased from swine raiser in Cathay Farm, Tanza, Cavite. They were fed three times a day with interval of four hours per feeding at 8 am, 12 noom, and 4 pm with starter and grower pellet with the hogs consuming 6 and 5 bags respectively. They were given vitamins and medicines when needed throughout the period of production. During the whole production, the problems encountered are the unavailability of the piglets, diarrhea, PRDC (Porcine Respiratory Disease Complex) and respiratory problem. The hogs were given the appropriate medication based on the recommendation of a licensed veterinarian.
The average initial body weight of the weanlings was 13.2 kg and obtained an average final weight of 72.25 kg. The average feed intake was 137.50 kg, with an average daily gain of 682 g and an average feed efficiency of 2.21.
The hogs were marked at ₱120 per kg live weight. The total production cost was ₱30,701.10 with gross sales amounting to ₱36, 230.00, obtaining a net income of ₱5,528.90. The return investment was 18%.
