This study was conducted to determine anti compare the response of stem cuttings of bitter leaf, tarragon and thyme to wood vinegar and Moringa leaf extract as natural rooting enhancers in terms of number, length, weight, volume and percentage of roots produced. The study was conducted from November 2015 to February 2016 at the Nursery of the Herbs and Spices Project of the Department of Crop Science of the College of Agriculture, Food, Environment and Natural Resources at Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite.
The study was laid out using a 3 x 3 Factorial in Randomized Complete Block design (RCBD) with root enhancers (E) as Factor A and types of herbs (T) as Factor B with three replications having fifteen (15) cuttings in each treatment combination. The basal part of the stem cuttings were dipped about 3/4 of an inch for a minute in its respective treatments (control, mle and wv) before setting in the propagation beds filled with coarse river sand. A week after, re-application of the treatments was done for three consecutive weeks at weekly interval by irrigating the treated cuttings with soil solution diluted with following the ratio (30 times diluted MLE, 500 times diluted wv), and tap water for the control. Six cuttings of the bitter leaf, tarragon and thyme per treatment were uprooted for every data gathering to measure each root growth parameters.
Based from the results of this study, it was found out that using 49ringa leaf extract could increase the percentage germination, number, weight and volume of roots produced by three herbs used in the study. It was also observed that using wood vinegar, the length of the roots significantly increased. Also, it was observed that using wood vinegar slightly increased the percentage germination, number, weight and volume of roots produced as compared to a control stem cuttings.
Root enhancers do not cause consistent significant effect on the root growth of bitter leaf, tarragon and thyme. The numbers of roots, rooting percentage including root weight and root volume are enhanced by Moringa leaf extract. Root length of the herbs is better enhanced by wood vinegar
