Construction of a Concentrated Solar Thermoelectric Generator. Undergraduate Design

A study was conducted in Cavite State University — Main Campus, Indang, Cavite. It
generally aimed to design and construct a concentrated solar thermoelectric generator.
Specifically, it aimed to: l) determine the most effective design for the maximum thermal
difference; 2) determine the power requirement of the system based on its load 3) determine the
number of TEG modules based on its specification; 4) determine the size of the load controller;
5) assembly of the system; 6) test and evaluate the generating system., 7) conduct cost
computation.
The concentrated solar thermoelectric generator design was based from the datasheet of
the TEG module. The study is containing 30 pieces of TEG modules that will be used for the
power generation. Despite of meeting the required thermal difference, the output power of the
said system does not match the calculated output that was based in the specification sheet of
the module.
The design configuration in array connections of the TEG modules was based on the
actual measured values. The design of the concentrator was successful because it can maintain
a thermal difference of 10 to 20 degree Celsius at peak hours, good enough to get an output
that can make the booster work and supply the charger the required voltage. The problem
encountered by the researchers was dealing with the low efficiency of the TEG module andthe
low current output of the system that cause the slow charging of the battery. The CSTEG has an
efficiency of 0.59 percent.
The total cost of the study amounted to P21,684.
