New world in the making -- Global economy -- Global political system -- Population and migration -- Role of international organizations in making of contemporary world -- Index.

"How did the global community, both as an idea as a reality, emerge and develop? This question may be examined in many ways, but one possible approach would be to look at the creation, growth, and activities of international organization, both governmental and nongovernmental. The contemporary world is an ever-changing mix of social and political changes. While religious, political, and ethnic conflicts continue, we are currently living in one of the most peaceful eras in the history of the planet. Challenges of the 21st century include emerging technologies, health care, over population, climate change, poverty, illiteracy, disease, and migration. How we choose to deal with these emerging frontiers will shape this course for future generations.

This course offers a good understanding of the process through which the contemporary world came into being, of the current discussion in global history and of relevant theories and approaches. The course will be of interest to students understanding in international relations and politics, economics and development, providing the historical context within which place contemporary developments in and against which to test general claims about the world today. This content coverage is in five units under three sections."--Back cover.
