BINAUHAN, EDWARD A. Lesser-Known Medicinal Plants in Selected Municipalities of Batangas. Special Problem Report. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Horticulture. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2006. Adviser: Dr. Celso S. Crucido.

A study was conducted to determine the lesser-known medicinal plants in selected municipalities of Batangas. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the lesser-known medicinal plants used by albularyos’ and hilots in selected municipalities of Batangas; describe the healing power and therapeutic value of these medicinal plants; and collect specimens for inclusion in germplasm collection of medicinal plants. Data were collected from 11 albularyos’ and hilots in selected municipalities of Batangas, namely: Nasugbu, Lian, Lemery, Tuy, Calaca, Balayan and Calatagan. Sample specimens of 13 lesser-known medicinal plants were brought to the University where the plants were preserved and nurtured. Study showed that a typical albularyo/hilot from the selected municipalities of Batangas was middle aged, male and married who attended formal schooling and have been practicing their craft for an average of nine years. Sixty-eight lesser-known medicinal plants were identified in Batangas. Thirteen of them, namely: antipolo (Artocarpus blancoi Merr.), balatong aso (Cassia occidentalis Linn.), bulak manok (Vernonia cinerea), dilaw (Curcuma longa), granada (Punica granatum), hauili (Ficus hauili Blanco), kamantigi (Impatiens balsamina), kamuning (Murraya paniculata), kiapo (Pistia stratiotes), luya-luyahan (Curcuma zedoaria), talong punay (Datura metel), talong-talongan (Solanum cumingii), and ulasiman-kalat (Hedyotis diffusa) were collected and maintained at the gemplasm collection.
Chemical analysis of the lesser-known medicinal plants is recommended to verify pharmacological properties for possible contribution in the field of medicine
