This farm practice was conducted at the backyard piggery project of Mrs. Juliana T. Norcio of barrio Buna Cerca, Indang, Cavite from September 3 to February 3, 1985. It aimed to apply the modern techniques in managing a piggery project and to determine the profitability of producing market hogs. Two piglets were used with the total initial weight of 33.00 kilograms or an average weight of 16.50 kilograms. They were housed in a clean and disinfected pen. Wet feeding was practiced during the entire period. The stocks were fed two times a day. Strict hygiene and sanitation such as cleaning the pen and bathing the animal was observed. Fresh and clean drinking water was regularly provided. Feces were brought to a distant compost pit. Monthly weighing was done to determine the increase in weight of the animal. After five months, the animal gained a total weight of 182.4 kilograms with an average of 91.2 kilograms. Each growing hog consumed an average of 300 kilograms of feed/head. These animals showed a feed efficiency of 3.99 or 4.
The total expenses of the project was Y3,980.00 and the total sales of 2 hogs at wholesale basis amounted to 74,300, a net return of 0348.00.
