A project "Furrow System of Planting in Upland Rice Production" was conducted at Lumampong Balagbag, Cavite from June to October, 1994. The project, Indang,
aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of producing upland rice using furrow system of planting, provided the farm practice student the experience in managing a small agricultural enterprise, and served as avenue in gaining skills in planting upland rice using furrow system of planting. The 1,500-square meter land was prepared with animal drawn implement. It was plowed and harrowed three times with one week interval. Shallow furrows with a distance of 20 centimeters apart and 4 centimeters deep were made with the use of carabao drawn plow just before planting . Cultural management such as weeding, cultivation, fertilization, pest and disease control were likewise followed. A total of 383.5 kilos of milled rice was obtained from 72 cans of palay and sold at P14.00 per kilo. A total of 23.6 can of rice bran was obtained and sold at P20.00 per can. The actual expenses of the project was P3,821.76. The net income amounted to P2, 019.25. After deducting the total expenses from the total sale of P5, 841.50, the Return on Investment (ROI) of 52.83% was obtained.
