The study, "Response of Tomato (Lycopersicom esculentum Mill ) to Clear and Different Colored Polyethylene Mulch". was conducted: 1 ) to find out the response of tomato to clear and different colored polyethylene mulch; 2) to determine what treatment or color of the polyethylene mulch is best for the good performance of tomato. This was conducted at Buna Cerca, Indang, Cavite from April to June 1990.
Seed box filled with mixed and sterilized soil medium was prepared f or sowing the seeds, eighteen plots with a dimension of 5 x 4 feet raised 5 inches above the ground was prepared. A total of 108 tomato crops were used in this study. The six treatments of the study were arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The treatments used in this study are T1 control ;black polyethylene mulch; green polyethylene mulch; T 4 - white polyethylene mulch; silver polyethylene mulch; clear or transparent polyethylene mulch.
This study revealed that the best treatment or mulch in general was the b lack polyethylene mulch since was proven to be superior in al l results more specifically in terms of plant height, onset of f lowering, production and weight of the total number of marketable fruits. Meanwhile, the Unmulched potatoes or treatment one gave the poorest result from among the treatments. The study showed that the used of polyethylene mulches shows superiority over the control specially the black polyethylene mulch. Furthermore, polyethylene mulches could be successfully practiced for crop production due to good results obtained under Indang condition.
Based on the results obtained in the study, the use of polyethylene films, specially black polyethylene films as mulch for tomato is therefore recommended.
