ATANGAN, LEE ANDREW C., CAPUPUS, NEPHI LORENSO P., TEPORA, ARVIN R.. Citronella-Scented Candle with Activated Charcoal as an Alternative to Commercial Scented Candle to Eliminate Foul Odor of Selected Household Materials. Research Project (STEM Strand, K-12 Curriculum) Laboratory Science High School, College of Education, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite May 2019. Adviser: Professor Florence R. Jimenez.

The study was done at Cavite State University Laboratory Science High School from January to May 2019. to develop an alternative citronella-scented candles with activated charcoal to eliminate foul odor of the selected household fumes. Specifically, the study aimed to: 1. determine its properties in terms of texture, brightness quality, burn rate, scent diffusion, overall appearance and consumer’s acceptability; 2. determine the differences between the citronella scented candle with activated charcoal and a commercially available scented candle; 3. determine the cost of production of citronella-scented candle with activated charcoal; and, 4. determine the most appropriate mixture of citronella scented candle with activated charcoal.

There were 30 participants from Cavite State University-Laboratory Science High School that answered a questionnaire. Opportunity random sampling was used to select the participant. The data gathered were subjected to One-Way ANOVA and Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD) post hoc test, the means and standard deviation of the data was also gathered.

Based on the results of this study the performance of the treatments with activated charcoal is comparable to the commercial citronella scented candles in terms of texture, brightness quality, burn rate, scent diffusion, overall appearance and consumer’s acceptability. Treatment 1 gave the best results in terms of texture, brightness quality, and general acceptability. Treatment 2 produced the best result in terms of burn rate. Treatment 3 gave the best result in terms of scent diffusion and both treatment 1 and treatment 3 gave the best result in terms of overall appearance. Treatments with activated charcoal produced a product that is cheaper than the commercially available scented candles. It can also be noticed in our test that more activated charcoal present in the scented candle the more it absorbs the foul odor.

In general, the study revealed that citronella scented candle with activated charcoal is capable of being an alternative to commercially available scented candles.
