PARIAN, LEMMOR C.; SIERRA, RAVE PAULO PIOLO V.; SIMBULAN, JOHN MILTON B. Hair Styling Wax with Virgin Coconut Oil, Aloe Vera Extract, and Mango Butter in Minimizing Dandruff and Hair Fall. Capstone Research, Senior High School (General Science Curriculum). Laboratory Science High School, College of Education, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. May 2019. Adviser: Dr. Hosea L. Matel.

This capstone research was conducted to formulate a styling wax with virgin coconut oil, aloe vera extract, and mango butter at the Research Center and Laboratory Science High School from February to May 2019. Specifically, the project sought to (1) determine the demographic profile of the participants during the period of product testing in terms of prevalence of dandruff and hair fall among participants, occurrence of dandruff and hair fall at the time of testing, frequency of styling wax usage, and frequency of checking ingredients used in cosmetics, (2) identify which treatment is most desirable in terms of physical property (color, odor, consistency, and feel) and adverse effects (irritability and risk of dandruff and hair fall), (3) compare the significant differences between the control treatment (conventional hair styling wax) and the experimental treatment (natural styling wax), and (4) estimate the cost of production of the produced styling wax. A randomized trial was conducted on 20 respondents to evaluate and test the control treatment and the experimental treatment for one day in terms of its physical properties and possible adverse effects. Results were interpreted by mean, standard deviation, and T-test for paired samples. Demographic profile shows that dandruff and hair fall is less frequent and less likely to happen in the participants while there is little frequency on the usage of styling waxes and checking ingredients listed from cosmetic products, implying that they are not susceptible to dandruff and hair fall by means of using hair products such as styling waxes. Means show that the control treatment (TO) has more desirable physical properties while the experimental treatment (T1) gives less risk of irritability, dandruff, and hair fall. Significance values show that the experimental treatment (T1) is much different in terms of consistency, irritability, and dandruff occurrence. Cost of production is estimated to be at P370.00 - P1,486.00 or higher depending on the availability, pricing, and amount of the materials to be used and each piece may cost P81.38 - ~371.50 or higher. A longer testing period in future researches using actual people with dandruff and/or hair fall may be employed to ensure the validity of the results being gathered. Materials of better quality may be used to create similar products with better physical property.
