The study, entitled "Growth Performance of Philippine Native Chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus L.) Fed Commercial Feeds with Varying Levels of Papaya (Carica papaya L.) Leaf Extract was conducted in Brgy. Banayad, Mendez, Cavite from December 2018 to April 2019 to determine the effect of papaya leaf extract on the growth performance of Philippine native chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus L.). Generally, the study was conducted to determine the effects of varying levels of papaya leaf extract (PLE) under the same curing hours on feed digestibility and growth performance of Philippine native chickens. Specifically, this study aimed to (1) determine the optimum level of papaya leaf extract that is most beneficial to native chickens through body weight, gain in weight, average daily gain, feed conversion ratio, and feed consumption; (2) determine the level of supplementation with the highest return above feed cost; and (3) evaluate the effect of papaya leaf extract on nutrient composition of commercial feeds specifically on crude protein content.
Results showed that varying levels of papaya leaf extract (PLE) significantly increased (P<0.01) the body weight, feed intake, weekly cumulative gain, average daily gain, and feed conversion ratio. Adding PLE at 15 percent level showed best result with a higher return above feed and PLE cost with P97.92 as compared with other treatments. Adding 15 percent of PLE denatured the crude protein of feeds which turned 14.84 percent crude protein to 13.64 percent crude protein
