This study was conducted to identify the life challenges and aspirations of Grade 10 children of migrant workers in Naic, Cavite.
Specifically, the study aimed to determine the challenges they have encountered while their parents are working abroad; the aspirations of students for themselves and for their parents who are working abroad; determine the coping ways of students in handling their problems and to identify the services and program that MSWDO- Naic provides to the OFW parent/s and their children.
The narrative research design was used in the study and the purposive sampling method to determine the participants of the study.
The participants of this study were the fifteen (15) Grade10 students of migrant workers from Naic. Eight (8) participants were from Naic Coastal National High School and seven (7) were from Naic National High School. This also includes one registered social worker from the Municipal Social Welfare Development Office (MSW DO) Naic.
The results of the study revealed that these Grade 10 students experienced problems in school, at home, and financially. The absence and/or presence of their parents also contributed a lot to the difficulties of the students. The study also found out that there were no significant changes in the life of the migrant workers and their family when it comes to financial aspect as they continue to experience difficulties in financial matters despite of long years of working abroad. Peers were the companion of the students in overcoming their problems as they get social support from them. Aside from their peers, the devotion of students to God is their way of handling their problems. But in spite of all the struggles that this Grade 10 students encountered, they still dream big not only for themselves but also for their families, as they aspire to be successful individuals in the future and be of help to their parents and their families. The togetherness of the family is also the aspiration of the majority of Grade 10 students. In response to the life changing situation of the Grade 10 students and their parents, the Municipal Social Welfare Development Office offered services and program that they can avail such as counseling, leadership training, youth development session, livelihood training session and financial management. These were the programs that they can avail in MSWDO- Naic.
