One hundred twenty pigs were used in a 4 x 3 factorial experiment in completely randomized design. Factor A was the strain/breed combinations and Factor B, the sexes (gilts, barrows and boars). The main objective of the study was to determine what particular strain/breed combination and sex will give the best growth performance and carcass traits. All barrows and some gilt were slaughtered for carcass analysis. Strain 1 (F4DJ interse) had the shortest period to reach 100 kilograms body weight and had the highest dressing percentage (P <.01).
Strain 1 was comparable to Strain 4 (F4F3 x Hypor) in average daily gain, carcass length and loin eye area which were significantly better than Strains 2 and 3 (F4F3 interse and F4F3 x DJ, respectively) at P‹ .05 Strain 1, however, had the shortest carcass (P.01), whereas Strain 3 had the thinnest backfat (P<.01) and best marbling (P‹.05). Strain 2 had the thickest backfat (P‹.01), lowest lean cut weight and dressing percentage (P<.01). As a consequence, it had the lowest index value®.
No interaction effect was observed between strain/breed combinations and sexes both in growth performance and carcass traits.
Strain 1 had the highest index score followed by Strains 4, 3 and 2 in descending order. Between sow groups, the F4ar's were better than the F4F3's. Among the F4F3's, the Hypor-sired were comparable to the Duroc Jersey-sired pigs, whereas, the F4F3 interse mated pigs had the lowest index.
The UPLB-NSDB strains are not behind as com-pared with the standard of excellence set by swine authorities. Gilts, barrows and boars are the same in growth performance. Except for lean cut weight and dressing percentage which favored gilts (P <05) all other carcass traits were similar.
