This study determined the needs and social behavior of out-of-school youth enrolled in Alternative Learning System (ALS) in upland towns of Cavite.

Specifically, the study sought to answer the following objectives: (1) to determine the needs of out-of-school-youth in terms of functional literacy; self-development; career development; family relationship; and social relationship; (2) to determine the social behavior of out-of-school youth, both positive and negative; and (3) to determine the relationship between the needs and social behavior of out-of-school youth (OSY).

The researcher used Spearman’s Rank Correlation coefficient to determine the relationship between the needs and social behavior of the OSY. The respondents of the study came from the towns of Indang, Tagaytay, Alfonso, Mendez and Maragondon. A total of 150 OSYs were enrolled in the ALS. Their ages ranged from 15 to 21 years old. Pre-survey indicated that there were 76 males and 74 females who were considered as participants of the study. The researcher modified the Need Assessment of Villar (2009) as an instrument for needs. The researcher included items on functional literacy and career development. This inventory is composed of 45 items. The instrument used for social behavior was developed by Avilla (2007). It contains items which measured the social behavior of individuals.

On the needs of out-of-school youths (OSYs), they perceived themselves to have extreme needs regarding career development. They considered functional literacy and self-development as “very much needed” by them. Similarly, family relationship and social relationship were thought by them as “very important”. Regarding the OSY social behavior, they perceived themselves to manifest highly positive social behavior. It was found that needs of OSYs and their social behavior were positively correlated. Among the dimensions of needs, functional literacy, family, and social relationship were found to be significantly related to social behavior. However, career development and self- development were found not to be significantly correlated with social behavior. The hypothesis that there is no significant relationship between the needs and social behavior of out-of-school youths has to be rejected.
