MARASIGAN, MARJORIE FAVOR, Demographic Transition and Household Savings in CALABARZON, 1961- 2010. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Economics, major in Business Economics. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2012. Adviser: Ms. Maria Soledad M. Lising.

The study was conducted to determine the relationship between demographic transition and household savings in CALABARZON, 1961-2010. Specifically, the study aimed to determine: (1) the demographic profile of CALABARZON in terms of total population, population growth rate, population density, sex ratio, number of households and human development index (HDI); (2) the amount of savings of households in CALABARZON; (3) the relationship of demographic profile to the level of household savings; and, (4) the relationship of demographic transition to aggregate savings and Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP).

Secondary data used in the study were obtained from government institutions, such as the National Statistics Office, National Statistical Coordination Board, National Economic Development Authority, Family Income Expenditure Survey and other articles and journals. Pearson product- moment correlation was used to determine the degree of relationship between the demographic profile and household savings; demographic transition and aggregate savings and Gross Regional Domestic product (GRDP).

Except for the correlation between the household savings and the population growth rate, all the coefficients were significant at 5 percent. The total population, the population density and the number of households were highly correlated with the household savings, while a moderate correlation existed between the dependent variable and the sex ratio. The human development index (HDI) established moderate negative correlation with household savings. The demographic transition, measured in terms of birth and death rates, has high negative relationship with aggregate savings having the coefficients of -0.906 and -0.703, respectively (p>0.05). On the other hand, the demographic transition, measured in terms of birth rates, has high negative relationship with the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP).
