This study entitled “HIV Awareness Among Out-of-School and In-School Youth in the Province of Cavite” was conducted in various municipalities, specifically Indang, Naic, Rosario and Imus from July 2011 to October 2011. The study aimed to describe the demographic profile of the out-of- school and in -school youth in Cavite in terms of age, gender, religion, civil status; determine the level of awareness of the respondents regarding HIV in terms of the nature, mode of transmission, case detection and the prevention of the disease; determine the significant relationship between demographic characteristics and level of awareness of the respondents about HIV; determine the significant difference between the level of awareness of out-of-school and in-school youth regarding HIV.
The study was conducted among 780 respondents, 390 out-of -school youth and 390 in-school youth within the province of Cavite chosen through fish bowl method. Data were collected using a developed questionnaire. The first part of the questionnaire assessed the respondent’s demographic profile including their age, gender, civil status, religion. The second part assessed the awareness of the respondents about the nature of HIV, case detection (diagnostic exam), mode of transmission and prevention. Results indicated that most of the respondents belong to the age bracket of 17 to 19; they are mostly females for in-school youth and mostly male for out- of-school youth, both group of respondents were mostly single and Roman Catholic. Results further revealed that both in-school and out-of-school youth have moderate level of awareness regarding HIV. There is no significant difference between the level of awareness of in-school and out-of-school regarding HIV.
