The study was conducted to determine and compare the efficacy of carbetocin with oxytocin in managing second and third stage of parturition in swine. A total of twenty (20) second to fourth parity sows were used in the study. The animals were blocked based on parity and equally distributed into two treatment groups. The Ti was given oxytocin (.08 IU/kg), and T2 was given carbetocin (.0004 mg/kg), both were given IM, immediately after the first fetus was delivered. Interval of piglet expulsion in Treatment 1, was 11.75 minutes (±5.83) treatment two which was 8_58 (±3.58) minutes.

The duration of placental expulsion for treatment one was 77.30 (±39.59) minutes while treatment two took 68.60 (±55.57) minutes. The stillbirth rate of treatment one was 2.82 % while Treatment 2 which has 1.52 %. However, the observed difference in all parameters was statistically not significant.

None of the experimental animals showed clinical signs of mastitis-metritis-agalactia syndrome after farrowing. Both drugs were effective in managing second and third stage of parturition. However, it was observed in the study that carbetocin (350pesos/10m1) was more economical to use than oxytocin (400pesos/10m1).
