The potential use of industrial waste product as a growing media for lettuce was evaluated. The study determined the growth response of lettuce grown in media containing industrial waste. Specifically, the study identified the most appropriate level of industrial waste to be mixed with soil in growing lettuce, and evaluated the growth of lettuce under the various alternative media.

Planting of lettuce plants at the media was done at the greenhouse near the SAKA area of Cavite State University Indang, Cavite from December 2000 to January 2001. The 16 treatments evaluated were as follows: T1, 1 part of dicalite,, T2, 2 parts of dicalite,; T3, 3 parts of dicalite,;, T4, 4 parts of dicalite,; TS, 1 parts of grit, T6, 2 parts of grit,; T7, 3 parts of grit, T8, 4 part of grit,; T9, 1 part of filter cake,; T10, 2 parts of filter cake,; T11, 3 parts of filter cake,; T12, 4 parts of filter cake,; T13, 1 part of sawdust,, T14, 2 parts of sawdust, T15, 3 parts of sawdust, and T16, 4 parts of sawdust.

Height of lettuce plants were recorded weekly to determine their response to the different alternative growing media. In the different industrial waste and its corresponding treatments, T9R2 (1 part of filter cake), T13R4 (1 part of sawdust) and T3R3 (3 part of dicalite) produced better plant growth. T3R3 has a pH of 7.2, low in nitrogen and potassium but high of phosphorus. T9R2 has a pH of 7.2, low nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. T13R4 has a soil pH of 7.2, low in nitrogen and potassium but high in phosphorus.

Analysis was done on the soil mixed with the industrial waste to determine the pH and NPK contents. The analysis was done through the use of pH and NPK solutions. Pure dicalite has a pH of 5.8, low in nitrogen and potassium but high in phosphorus. Pure grit has a pH of 7.6 and low in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. While pure sawdust has a pH of 5.8, has a medium amount of nitrogen, high in phosphorus and low in potassium. Filter cake has a pH of 6.8, has low of nitrogen, high of phosphonus and high of potassium.

In general, it revealed that sawdust, dicalite and filter cake could serve as an alternative media in vegetable production.
