A study was conducted to determine the correlation of fish scale dimension with growth parameters of Nile tilapia (O. niloticus) at the SAKA fishpond of the Cavite State University from July 2000 to February 2001. One hundred (100) fish samples were grown in a fish cage subsisting on natural food and sampled at 30-day interval up to 90 days. Growth parameters (body weight, length and depth) and fish scale dimensions (radials, annuli, DI — distal scale distance, D2 — proximal, D3 — dorsal and D4 — ventral) were determined and analyzed statistically using Pearson product-moment correlation and Multiple Regression. Results indicated strong correlation for fish age, body weight and length. Dorsal and medial scale dimensions were highly correlated with fish age and body weight. Regardless of scale source, DI and D3 were highly correlated with fish age and body weight.
The most suitable multiple regression equation that can be used to predict fish age under this culture condition was determined as:
Fish age = -746.43 + 11.24 (Annuli) - 16.55 (m) + 75.24 (D3)
