BARONE, ARLETH V.; FERRER. ELLAINE ANN N. Family Structure, Parenting Styles, and Emotional Quotient of High School Dropouts From Public High Schools in City of Dasmarinas, Cavite, Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Cavite State University, April 2014. Thesis Adviser: Mrs. Joy N. Babaan.
This research primarily aimed to study the family structure, parenting styles, and emotional quotient of high school dropouts from Dasmarinas City public high schools. It sought to: determine the family structure where the participants belong, the parenting styles of the parents of the participants, and the emotional quotient level of the participants. It also determined whether there was a significant relationship between family structure and parenting styles, family structure and emotional quotient, and parenting styles and emotional quotient. Primary data were gathered from 150 participants using two questionnaires: the first one is Parenting Styles Questionnaire (PSQ), a questionnaire developed by Buri (1991), and the second one is Emotional Intelligence Self-Evaluation used by Rodrin (2004). Subsequently, data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Chi-square test. Based on the results, most of the participants belonged to nuclear family. A complete family does not guarantee that a student will not drop out. Also, living with a single-parent family doubles the chance of an adolescent to drop out. Meanwhile, majority of the participants' has an authoritarian style of parenting which describes parents as strict, very demanding but not responsive. In addition, the participants showed an above average level of emotional quotient.
They are good at interpreting, understanding, expressing, and acting upon their own and other's emotions. It was revealed that family structures and parenting styles have a significant relationship with each other which means that whether the parent is single or not, they still have a particular parenting style used. Consequently, family structure and emotional quotient was not significantly related to each other because family structure is not the only factor which influences emotional quotient. Peers or environment might also be a factor. Meanwhile, parenting styles, and the participants' emotional quotient have no relationship but parents still affect the adolescents.
