Primary data were gathered through survey and interview.
Data were analyzed using frequency counts, range, mean and percentage. Tabular presentations were also used in analyzing the factors, socio-demographic data and present health status. Pearson R was used to determine the correlations between socio-demographic data and their level of awareness, source of exposure and preventive interventions to prevent secondhand smoke; and the relationship between present health status and source of exposure to secondhand smoke.
Five barangays in Rosario, Cavite were chosen using fish bowl technique with a total of 150 randomly selected participants ages 15-40. The results of the study revealed the following:
In terms of socio-demographic status, participants which are 30-40 years old are more exposed to secondhand smoke and most of them are female, single, high school graduates and are unemployed.
The results also revealed that there are twenty one percent of the participants who are asthmatic at the time effect of secondhand smoke.
All of the participants though aware of the effects of secondhand smoke mostly are still associated with friends/peer groups who are smoking. Participants who were practicing preventive intervention to minimize secondhand smoke is equal to the number of participants who do not practice preventive intervention.
Level of awareness is affected by the level of education, as the level of education increases; their level of awareness increases as well. Level of awareness is not affected by the participants' age, gender and income.
Exposure to secondhand smoke has significant relationship to the occupation of the participants.
Participants that have higher educational attainment and those who have occupations are becoming more conscious about preventive intervention to secondhand smoking.
The participants' present illness are not significantly related to the sources of exposure on secondhand smoking, which means that the present illness is not affected by the sources of exposure to secondhand smoking.
