The study was conducted with the following objectives: (1) to determine the socio-economic characteristics of the rural farm families, (2) to identify decision areas in the farm of rural farm families, (3) to identify the persons involved in making decisions for each decision area, and (4) to determine factors associated with the decision-making pattern among rural farm families. Four barrios, with 100 respondents, were selected as research areas of the study. Chi--square was used in testing relationship of variables. Average and percentages were also used. The mean age of the respondents was 44.5 years old. They were able to reach the intermediate level of schooling. Many were share tenants with an average of six members in the household. The mean size of their farm was 2.79 hectare The average number of years in farming was 20.8. The annual gross income of the farmers ranged from /3,000 to 76,000 with a mean of X4,481.07. Majority of the respondents considered farming as their primary source of income.
The farm families revealed the following patterns of decision-making: (1) family decisions dominated by husband, (2) joint family decisions, and (3) husband and wife in consultation with others. The majority of the decisions made by the husbands were those activities related- to the farm while those of the housewives were those relevant to household activities. Of the twenty decision areas made by the respondents six areas appeared to be joint husband-wife decisions. These areas were borrowing money, the amount of loan/credit, mode of the .payment, disposal of harvest, buying land and marketing of products harvested. Husbands made most of the decisions in the farm because they knew very much how to run farm business and they did the farming themselves. On the other hand, the desire for smooth husband-wife relationship and the appropriateness between the husband and wife to consult each other, were the reasons for having joint decisions.
