DE LARA, RONA R. April 2015 “Microbiological Analysis of Spring Water in Selected Barangays of Indang, Cavite”. Undergraduate thesis, Bachelor of Science in Biology, Department of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. Adviser: Prof. Ma. Fatima I. Cruzada.<br/><br/>The quality of spring water samples from Bancod, Guyam, Alulod, Limbon and CvSU were determined. The physico-chemical characteristics such as pH, temperature, turbidity, salinity, color, odor, and taste were all within the standard limits set by the Department of Health (DOH). The Heterotrophic Plate Count (HPC) obtained from the Limbon and CvSU spring water samples were both <500 cfu/ml and thus passed the standard. Samples from Bancod, Guyam, and Alulod had an HPC beyond the standard limit. All the water samples had a high Total Coliform and Fecal Coliform counts indicating that they are not safe to drink. Furthermore, species of Escherichia,<br/>Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Flavobacterium, Shigella, Salmonella, Serratia, Agrobacterium, Citrobacter, Edwardsiella and Proteus were isolated in the samples. These organisms are opportunistic pathogens that may bring health risk to the consumers. The presence of these pathogens can be dangerous if the water is not treated prior to consumption. Boiling of water is recommended to avoid waterborne diseases.<br/><br/> |
