Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, October 2015. Adviser: Dr. Adelaida Sangalang.<br/><br/>The study entitled “Antimicrobial Activity of Ethanol And Hexane Leaf, Bark and Root Extractof Triplaris Cumingiana”,was conducted at the Antibiotics Laboratory of BIOTECH at the University of the Philippines, Los Bafios in October 2014. The study generally aimed to determine the antimicrobial property of Triplaris cumingiana extract in inhibiting the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans. Specifically, it aimed to determine the phytochemical property of Triplaris cumingiana; and assess which part of the plant possesses greatest antimicrobial property against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans.<br/><br/>Samples were sent to the Department of Science and Technology for phytochemical testing. Candida albicans and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were procured from Philippine National Collection of Microorganisms (PNCM) at University of the Philippines Los Banos. Antimicrobial assay was done by cylinder-cup technique and results were obtained by measuring the zone of inhibition (mm).<br/><br/>Results of the study revealed that the phytochemical constituents of leaf of Triplaris cumingiana include sterols, flavonoids, saponins, glycosides and tannins. The bark of T. cumingiana yields positive results for triterpenes, flavonoids, saponins and glycosides. While the roots contain triterpenes, flavonoids, saponins, glycosides and<br/>tannins.<br/><br/>The ethanolic and hexanolic leaf, bark and root extracts of Triplaris cumingiana exhibited no antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. On the other hand, ethnolic leaf and bark extracts of T. cumingiana revealed low antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans while the ethanolic root extract of T. cumingiana yield no antimicrobial activity against C. albicans.<br/> |
