Summary, etc. |
This study was conducted to 1). Know the background characteristics of the rice farmers in Indangc , Cavite, 2) compare the labor requirements and labor productivity Of these farms, 3) compare the costs and returns of mechanized farms over tradition— ally operated farms; 4) ascertain the relationships between the selected variables identified and the methods of farming employed by the farmers, and 5) identify some socio—economic factors associated with the farmer's decisions on what power to use.
Seven barrios were selected as research areas for this study. total of 75 tractor—operators and 5 carabao—users were included in the study. /The total respondent was 150.
The average age of farmers was 47 Cn the average, they were able to reach the primary level of schooling. The average number of dependents was 60 of the farmers were lessees. The average number of years devoted to rice farming was 23 years with an average farm size of 2.13 hectares. Most of them relied much on rice farming as their main source of income. '2he average annual gross income was P8, 367. the mean annual gross income from rice was P7,440.12 the average annual net income from rice was 2. 3,581.45 per hectare. Majority of the tractor users hired the machines from their fellow farmers 0 host of the carabao—operators owned the animals they used in their operations
A total of 92.5 man—days per hectare was utilized in tractor—operated farm. It took 106.16 man—days to operate a hectare of land using our native carabao. An average labor productivity of 245. 1+7 and >3303 'l were derived from mechanized and traditionally operated farms respectively. here were significant differences between the labor productivities and man—labor days consumed in both farms.
'2he cost of producing a hectare of rice farm averaged r '1 , 852.69 for the mechanized farm with an average yield of 90 cavans while in the traditionally operated farm, the average cost of production per hectare was 21 , 258.78 with an average yield of 76 cavans per hectare. 'Ihe annual net income derived from farm operated by tractor and carabao cultivated did not show significant difference.
The methods of farming were dependent upon the type of landholding of the farmers, size of farm, annual gross income and educational attainment of the farmers. On the other hand, these were not affected by age, number of dependents, years of experience in rice farming and annual net income of farmers from rice.
The husband played an important role in the decision— making process in the family 0 Farmers who used hand tractors in their farms relied mostly on the recommendation of the technicians while, the carabao—operators considered first their availability of funds before deciding what mode of farming they will employ.
Farmers favored farm mechanization due to the reduction of working hours in land preparation while, other farmers insisted on the adoption of traditional method of farming due to lack of operating capital.
|
