Summary, etc. |
Austria, Erlinda Nueva, Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Cavite, "Procurement of Farm Equipment and Supplies of Lowland Rice Farmers in Cavite", March 1980.

This study was conducted to determine the: (1) socio-economic condition of the rice farmers; (2) different term supplies used by the farmers; (3) amount of expenditures for annual purchase or farm supplies; (4) reasons of the farmers decisions on what farm equipment and supplies to used; (5) relationship between procurement or farm supplies and selected variables; and (6) problems confronted by rice farmers in procurement or farm equipment and supplies. This was conducted in six barrios of two selected lowland towns or Cavite with the use of simple random sampling. One-hundred twelve farmers were included in the study. Majo The average age of the farmer was 48 years. Majority or them reached the primary and intermediate level of education. The average number of dependents per farmer was six.

Most of them were lessees. The average number of farming experience was 23 years and the mean size of the farm under cultivation was 2.35 hectares. The average gross income was 6,398.66. Additional income from off- farming, spouse's job, son's job, and daughter's job augmented to income. Almost all the farmers used the needed farm supplies in the production of rice. Such farm supplies were the fertilizers, chemicals, water supply, weeder, and others. Most of them used tractors as equipment and carabao as work stock animals. The husband or the head of the family was the one who made the final decision on those supplies to use. Their primary decision relied on the availability of funds for purchase of farm materials. The income from rice farming was closely associated with the procurement of farm supplies as well as the number or dependents and the experience in farming, Age, educational attainment, and tenure status seemed not related to the procurement of farm supplies.

The bigger the farm the higher the capacity of farmers to purchase equipment and materials. The most frequent problem cited by the rice farmers was the lack of water supply, especially during dry season. High cost of farm supplies and the lack of cash operating capital were also one of their major problems.
|
