BULQUERIN, MARY JOYCE, CASTRO, SHANNEN THERESE and
GLINDRO, MARK CHRISTIAN. In Vitro Screening of the Insecticidal Activity of Canarium ovatum Engl. Leaf Extract Against Adult Fleas (Ctenocephalides spp.). Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. November 2016. Adviser: Adelaida E. Sangalang, PhD.
The study was conducted from May 2016 to November 2016 in the laboratory of Medical Technology Department, College of Nursing and College of Veterinary Medicine and Biological Sciences, Cavite State University. Generally, it aimed to screen the insecticidal activity of Canarium ovatum Engl. leaf extract against adult fleas (Ctenocephalides spp.) in vitro. Insecticidal activity was screened based on the mortality rate of fleas using 25 percent, 50 percent, 75 percent, 100 percent Canariunl ovatum Engl. leaf dichloromethanolic extracts observed at different time intervals. Highest mortality (100%) of fleas was observed at 50 percent and 100 percent Canarium ovatum Engl. leaf extract at 15 minutes. This was significantly different to the negative control group but not to the other treatment groups, including the positive control.
All concentrations of Canarium ovalum Engl. leaf dichloromethanolic extracts were significantly comparable to the positive control. Lethal concentrations of Canarium ovatum Engl. was not further identified because the statistical analyses showed that there were no significant differences between the concentrations rendering probit analysis not necessary. Skin irritation and corrosion test revealed moderate to severe erythema and very slight edema in Sprague Dawley rats one hour after post application of the extract. Since Canarium ova/um Engl. was an effective insecticidal against fleas
(C/enocepha/ides spp.) based on the results derived from the study, this can be dravvn vii
reference and be tested ex vivo to be a formal insecticidal agent. Another phytochemical analysis can be done to further identify the most specific components that account for Canarium ova/um Engl. insecticidal activity. The researchers strongly recommend for future research using lower concentrations of the leaf extract and to make a profitable product such as an anti-flea shampoo or soap from Canarium ovatum Engl.
|
