Summary, etc. BAYBAY ROSETTE S., FONTANILLA MA. KATHLEEN D., LASQUITE JELAIZA MAE M. What Makes Them Special? An Interpretative Phenomenological Study on Special Education Teachers. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Cavite State University, Indang Cavite. April 2016. Thesis Adviser: Ms. Ana Ruth M. Andalajao, RPm.
This study was conducted to identify the peculiarity of the work of special educations teachers compared to other profession; identify their special strategies and techniques in teaching, find out how they provide for the special needs of their students; determine how they show service beyond work; find out what keeps them motivated at work; identify what is their significant contribution to the society. The study was conducted from June 2015 until December 2015. The study primarily focused on determining the life and work experiences of selected SpEd teachers at the province of Cavite that eventually made their work special. Interpretative Phenomenological Approach and Narrative Analysis was used in the study. Purposive sampling and snowball sampling was the technique used in selecting the participants of the study. The researchers used a semi-structured interview guide that is composed of three parts with sub-questions which includes the teacher and teaching SpEd; the teacher and student; and the teacher and SpEd experience. A total of eight (8) SpEd teachers participated in the study with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Education major in Special Education and employed for at least one year in the institution. Based on the results, unconditional love for the students, working for the outmost development of the students, magnified trivial problems, magnified satisfaction and achievement, and no child should be left behind are the themes revealed on the specialty of their work and their peculiarity compared to other profession. On the other hand, the summary of the narrative analysis supports the story of the life experiences of the special education teachers. The tone that was revealed in the story is optimism. Moreover, the narrative element that was revealed in the story is the progressive element. Finally, the themes revealed in the narrative analysis are the immeasurable effort meant for the students, love for the job and making a difference in teaching.
