ACLAN, ALFRED K. and LORENZO, CHOLIN H. Development of a
Microcontroller Based Braille Trainer. Undergraduate Design Project. Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. May 2017. Adviser: Engr. Michael T. Costa.
The study was conducted from December 2016 to May 2017 at Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite to develop a microcontroller-based Braille trainer. Specifically, it aimed to l. design and construct the circuitry of the device; 2. design and construct the hardware unit of the device; 3. develop a program for the text to speech unit; 4. develop a program for the device; 5. test and evaluate the performance of the device through pilot testing and questionnaires; and 6. determine the cost of the developed system.
The design project consists of push button keys with embossed Braille character that enables a blind person to recognized Braille, a microcontroller unit for processing input touch signals from the keys to converting to text and using a text-to-speech hardware to convert signals to speech or sound output. The circuitry of the device was designed and constructed including the hardware and the system program. The device program was developed using Arduino IDE and the circuit hardware was developed using PCB wizard. The device has three different modes: the learning mode, search mode and quiz mode. The unit was first subjected to technical test performed by the researchers before finally evaluated by visually impaired individuals.
Based on the results of the evaluation, the project met the given objectives. The system was able to produce output in accordance to the input and mode. The device was also able to prove its accessibility, performance, reliability, stress capacity, suitability, volume capacity and usability. The ratings given by the visually impaired respondents showed that the over-all functionality of the device is excellent. In the technical evaluation, the hardware and software operations underwent several tests, and concluded that the materials and program uploaded is reliable and working properly. It has been proven that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post test scores of the respondents. The increase in scores impose an increase in learning after the usage of the device. It then proves that the device developed successfully met the objective of being a Braille trainer.
Based on the result of the study, the authors recommended the following for the improvement of the project: l. use tact switches with accurate response and no debouncing needed; 2. use a Filipino language synthesizer; 3. provide stereo audio output; 4. install volume control; and 5. perform further evaluation using larger number of subjects
|
