Summary, etc. SALAZAR, JAKE MAVERICK B., and SAMSON, KATE CHELSEA S. The Art Deco Capital of Southern Luzon: An Architectural Profiling of Art Deco Structures in Sariaya, Quezon. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Architecture. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2018. Adviser: Arch. Christine Mariz G. Costa.
The study was conducted from August 2017 to April 2018 at Sariaya, Quezon, to provide an architectural profiling of the Art Deco Structures at the town which is known to be the Art Deco Capital of Southern Luzon. Specifically, it aimed to: 1. know the background of Sariaya in terms of history and town planning; 2. know the basis in calling Sariaya the Art Deco Capital of Southern Luzon; 3. analyze the evolution of architectural styles in Sariaya during American colonial period and how Art Deco developed in the town; 4. record the profile of the Art Deco structures in Sariaya; 5. identify the common and unique features and characteristics of each Art Deco structures in Sariaya; and 6. document, record, and develop detailed illustrations of the architectural profile of prominent Art Deco houses and structures in Sariaya, Quezon, which may later be recommended for conservation and adaptive reuse. The researchers applied several research methods to acquire their data. Literature search, interviews, photo documentations, and as-built measuring were conducted. The measured plans and elevations, as well as the architectural details, were manually-drawn for the presentation and discussion of data. The town planning in Sariaya was based on the Laws of the Indies. The history and geographical profile of Sariaya contributed on how architecture evolved in the town. Sariaya was considered as the Art Deco Capital of Southern Luzon due to its branding and its exceptional Art Deco structures. During the American colonial period which was also the pinnacle of the economic abundance in Sariaya, the styles that emerged in the town were Bahav-na-Bato, Itallianate, Palladianism, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco. The Art Deco structures found in Sariaya were the Ilagan Ancestral House, Emralino-Rodriguez Ancestral House, Gala-Rodriguez Ancestral House, Gov. Natalio Enriquez Ancestral House, and Sariaya Municipal Hall. These structures show the richness in architecture and design of the town. Their common characteristic is how intricate the designs were done. Based on the results of the study, it is hereby recommended that: 1. this must be used by architects and architecture students to further the study regarding the architectural styles in the Philippines, particularly the Art Deco; 2. this must be used by the local government unit and agencies in Sariaya for the development of the preservation and protection of their heritage structures; 3. this must be used by the citizens of Sariaya to develop interest and knowledge about the identity and cultural gems of their town; and 4. further study must be conducted for more research developments about Art Deco and cultural heritage preservation.
