MANDING, MARY ANN P., Career Preferences of Third Year High School Students at Sangley Point National High School, School Year 2012 - 2013. Master's Thesis. Master of Arts in Education major in Guidance and Counseling. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2013. Adviser: Dr. Alicia M. Rodrin.
This is an exploratory study about the career preferences of third year high school students of Sangley Point National High School in Cavite City. Specifically, the study was conducted to: (1) determine the socio-demographic profile of the respondents in terms of: sex; birth order; academic achievement; number of children in the family; father's occupation; mother's occupation; and monthly family income; (2) determine the degree of influence on respondents' career preference of the following persons:
parents/guardians and other family members; friends/peers; and guidance counselor; (3) find out the level of performance of the respondents according to: Percentile Rank of Areas of NCAE; and Percentage Score of Areas of Occupational Interest; (4) determine the relationship between the respondents' socio-demographic profile and their career preferences; (5) determine the relationship between the degree of influence of parents, peers/friends, and guidance counselor on the career preferences of the respondents; (6) determine the difference on percentile rank of areas of NCAE on the career preferences of the respondents; and (7) find out the difference on the percentage score of areas of occupational interest on the career preferences of the respondents.
Descriptive-correlational research method was used in this study. This study used the survey technique. Survey questionnaire determined the socio-demographic profile of the respondents and the degree of influence of the significant others on their career preferences. Results of National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE), a standardized test taken by the high school students nationwide throughout the Philippines, were also utilized in the study.
Results revealed that: males and females career preferences may vary; birth order would not vary whether the respondent is first child, second child, or youngest; academic achievement may be related to career preference of the students that is within their mental capabilities; whether the respondents belong to a small or large family, it does not affect their career preference; regardless of the respondents' father and mother's occupation and monthly family income, their career preference would not vary.
Personal service is the most preferred career of the third-year high school students of Sangley Point National High School. The students consider courses like seaman, pilot, mass communication courses, and courses related to hotel and restaurant management. However, the students are not yet ready for college for they still lack skills needed in the tertiary level.
The impact of parents on their child's personality development may not depend on their career preferences. Peer influence may vary among career preferences of the respondents. However, the influence of the guidance counselor on the respondents' career preferences may not differ.
Factors such as individual differences, students' multiple intelligences, and the like affect the career preferences of the respondents. The students are undecided on their career preferences. They are in the confusing situation, thus, a critical stage of deciding or choosing a career. |
