This study utilized narrative research method, which was used to answer the problems of the study. The research study was conducted in four (4) selected Residential Care Centers or institution in the province of Cavite, namely: Brothers of Christ in Brgy. Biclatan Gen. Trias City; Chosen Children Village Foundation, Inc. in Lalaan 2, Silang; Buhal ng Kapayapaan Missionaries of Charity brothers in Inocencio Trece Martires City; and Bahay San Raphael in Salaban, San Ricardo Pampuri Center, Amadeo with six (6) participants who are registered Social Workers who have one year of experience working with physically — challenged individuals.
The Social Workers view their positive attitudes as like of patience, open mindedness, and flexibility. Other participants consider positivity itself is one of their ways to deal with the challenges and task as a Social Worker handling physically-challenged individuals.
Likewise, the Social Workers consider their task as challenging yet fulfilling and the word empathy is one of the escalated terms according to the participants view. To deal with their clientele; they will end up with the quote "papano ko ba mapa-intindi ito sa kanila sa paraang maiintindihan nila. " Reflecting on the founding philosophy of social work "believes in human inherent worth and dignity", they treat their clientele as a normal person with chance and opportunity to improve and move forward in life. Some of the participants consider motherly love and compassion as one way of dealing with their clients to provide care and guidance towards their development.
On the other hand, most of the participants admitted that handling physically challenged individuals as clientele is indeed challenging. It tests the whole well-being of the person handling them. The challenges and difficulty they has encountered are, multitasking, admin work and case management, linking for adoption, the level of understanding of the clients, behavioral and disciplinary actions, facilitating and educating basic actions, and lastly controlled emotional involvement.
|
