Summary, etc. MARGES, ROGEL y ROCELA, Don Severino Agricul-tural College, April 1990. "A Comparative Study on the Profitability of Coconut-Based and Coffee-Based Cropping System un Upland Cavite." Adviser: Mrs; Nelia E. Feranil.
This study aimed primarily to: 1) identify the different cropping patterns practiced by farmers engaged in coffee-based and coconut-based farming system; 2) determine the cost and return of the different cropping patterns practiced by the farmers; 3) compare the profitability of coffee-based and coconut-based cropping system; and 4) determine the problems encountered by farmer respondents. Information about the demographic characteristics of farmers show that the age, household size, educational attainment and farming experience of farmers engaged in coffee-based cropping system were higher than those of the farmers engaged in coconut-based cropping system. Majority of the a farmers en-gaged in coffee-based farming system were-owners,, and regarded farming as their main source of income. Likewise, farmers engaged in coconut-based farming system were either owner or tenants and also regarded farming as their main source of income. The different coffee-based cropping patterns adopted by farmer are coffee-banana, coffee-banana-fruit trees, coffee-banana-papaya, and coffee-banana-papaya-fruit trees-black pepper. On the other hand, farmers engaged in coconut-based farming system practiced the following patterns: Coconut-papaya-pine apple-banana, coconut-pineapple-papaya-banana-fruit trees, coconut-banana and coconut-pineapple-fruit trees. Among the coffee-based cropping patterns, coffee-banana pattern obtained the highest net profit while on coconut-based cropping pattern, coconut-pine-apple-papaya-banana-fruit trees pattern got the highest profit. Test statistics showed that coffee-based farm-ng system and coconut-based farming system. had no significant difference in terms of production cost, gross revenues and net returns. High cost of production inputs was the most common problem of the farmers.
