Major Professor: Dr. Bonifacio T. Mercado<br/><br/>The feasibility of intercropping sugarcane with mungo and sorghum was studied at UPLB-La Granja, La Carlota City. The intercrops were planted in the same furrows occupied by the sugarcane or as close as possible to the rows of cane. Agronomic characters of the sugarcane plant, grain yield of the intercrops as well as the dry matter yield of the sugarcane were determined at four months after plantings.<br/><br/>This system of intercropping significantly reduced the dry matter yield of sugarcane plants. Sorghum intercropped plot produced the lowest cane tonnage, followed by mungo, relative to the dry matter production of sugarcane alone plots.<br/><br/>Of the two intercrops used, mungo did not significantly affect the yield of sugarcane. Sorghum, on the other hand, outgrew the sugarcane plant to seriously impair the growth. A plant population of 100,000 plants per hectare of mungo intercrop gave a<br/>higher grain yield than the 200,000 plant population.<br/><br/>The economic analysis of the yield of the mungo intercrop suggests that intercropping sugarcane with mungo can augment the income of the sugarcane farmers.<br/> |
